Career Development

Career and professional development is an important part of your postdoctoral training. The Postdoctoral Program Office offers a variety of programs and courses to help you make the most of your tenure here at NYU. Whether you are just starting out in your postdoc career or moving on to the next phase in your professional career, we can help. Here's how:

  • Career and Professional Skills Development

NPA Core Competencies There is no doubt that for postdocs, mastering a range of skills is essential in preparing for jobs in academia or private industry. We recognize this need and our office is now structuring our entire career developmental activities based on the National Postdoctoral Association’s Core Competencies. These six Core Competencies offers guidance for postdocs to proactively manage their individual career and professional development. Using these core competencies, we can help you to take charge of your own professional career development. All of our career developmental activities are aligned with the NPA’s six Core Competencies and seek to provide the necessary training in the skills and performance required to achieve career success. • Grant Writing

Our office has been designing training programs to train postdocs in laboratory management and grants and scientific communication. Our granting course is designed to introduce every aspect of grant writing, from abstract to submission. It also helps in selecting funding mechanisms, writing individual grant sections and understanding administrative policies. This course is primarily taught by experienced NYU faculty members, Sponsored Programs and IRB representatives. Outside speakers from the NIH and other organizations are also asked to participate. • Funding Sources

Internal and external funding opportunities are available to our postdocs of all levels - from those just defending their PhDs to those transitioning to their first faculty position.
