About the Council

NYU Postdoctoral Association

Jaime Blais

Hi NYU Postdocs,
As the new chair of the postdoc council at NYUMC I would like the chance to thank all of you for attending our professional development events, career skills workshops, and our social networking events that we cater specifically to the postdoc community. Your enthusiastic attendance has helped to make the 2009-2010 academic year the most successful to date. The members of our postdoc council have been busy planning many more events for the upcoming academic year and we hope to encourage you all to attend. The successful planning and execution of these events takes a dedicated team of postdoctoral fellows and we’re always looking for new members to join our ranks. If you are looking to gain leadership skills, build on your professional network, and are looking for an opportunity to get involved in planning social and career centric events, feel free to contact me, Jaime Blais at: Jaime.Blais@nyumc.org

Best of luck to all of you in research this year, looking forward to meeting you at our next event.

My name is Katey Rayner, and I’m a postdoc on the 7th floor of Smilow in the Cardiology department.  I am originally from Ottawa, Canada…a proud Canadian!  And yes avery stereotypical hockey fan.  I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto and completed my PhD at the University of Ottawa.  I only recently moved to NYC when my supervisor, Dr. Kathryn Moore, moved her lab from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston to NYU. Our lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis, and we study both the lipid metabolism and the inflammatory contributions to this disease process.  More specifically, I am studying microRNAs and how they regulate hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis.  I’m excited to be involved with the postdoc council; I think it’s great that NYU has such a connected and involved group for postdocs and grad students.  It makes those very long days (and even longer weeks!) a little more bearable.

Jeff Skaar, PhD, is currently apostdoctoral fellow in Michele Pagano’s laboratory in the NYU Cancer Instituteand Department of Pathology. His work focuses on the regulation of the hSSB1-mediated DNA damage response and the identification of novel substratesfor orphan F-box proteins. Before coming to NYU, Jeff was a graduate student in Harvard University’s Virology Program, in Boston, MA, working in JamesDeCaprio’s laboratory at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. For his dissertation, he performed biochemical and genetic characterizations of CUL9 and CUL7 complexes.
