Postdoctoral Position at NYU School of Medicine - Dept of Cell Biology
A postdoctoral position is available to study the identification and biology of prostatic stem cells. This study will focus on aspects of stem cell biology in the prostate gland in the laboratory of Lynette Wilson (bibliography under Elaine Lynette Wilson) at New York University School of Medicine.
Prostatic stem cells and tumor cells have many common features. As stem cells may represent the major target of carcinogenesis and may also play a role in benign prostatic hypertrophy, the isolation and identification of prostatic stem cells is of relevance to both diseases. We have recently shown that prostatic stem cells are located in a niche in the proximal region of mouse prostatic ducts, express high levels of Sca-1 and are maintained in a quiescent state by generating active TGF-ß in the stem cell niche (J Cell Biol 157, 1257-1265, 2002; J Cell Biol 170; 81-90, 2005; Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 102; 7180-7185, 2005; Stem Cells 24; 1859-1868, 2006). This project will include the isolation of prostatic stem cells and determining if they are targets of transformation. We are also defining the molecules and pathways expressed in the prostatic stem cell niche using microarrays to determine a prostate stem cell gene expression signature (Blum R et al PLoS One 29 May 2009; 4(5); e5722; Blum et al PLoS One September 2010; 5(9); e13024). We have recently identified several interesting genes that are over expressed in prostate stem cells and plan to study their biology in the normal prostate as well as in prostate cancer (Burger PE et al Stem Cells 2009;27: 2220-2228). We are also isolating prostate tumor stem cells to determine similarities and differences with normal stem cells to develop strategies that target prostate cancer stem cells specifically.
