Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) INSTRUCTIONS

Interested students must complete the online application form and also submit a personal essay with the application. Additionally you will be required to submit 2 letters of recommendation and an official transcript from all colleges and universities previously attended. Please follow all directions below.

1. WRITE YOUR PERSONAL STATEMENT
You will be required to write a personal essay (approximately 500 words) that explains your career plans and reasons for applying to this program. Indicate the areas of your interest and describe any research experience, courses or laboratory work, which have stimulated your interest in research. Indicate what graduate courses and/or laboratory work have best prepared you for this program. Please be sure to include your name and date of birth on each page. The essay should be double spaced, written with a size 12 font and should be in PDF format. Be sure to proof your essay (as you will be required to upload this document to attach it to the online application).

2. CHOOSE YOUR RECOMMENDERS
You will be required to include the names and the institutional email addresses of the faculty member who will be writing your letters of recommendation. It is advisable that you request letters from someone whom you have done research with, as well as a letter from a professor, dean and/or advisor who knows you well. The faculty members will be notified once you submit your application and will submit their letters electronically through our online system.

3. LINK TO THE ONLINE APPLICATION
Once you link to the online application, you will be prompted to complete the information requested. Most information is required (ethnicity is optional). Once your essay is uploaded, you may submit your application. After submission, you will be taken to a “Thank You” page which indicates that your application has been received.

4. REQUEST A TRANSCRIPT
Ask your college or university registrar to send an official transcript(s) directly to the Sackler Program Office. It is the responsibility of the applicant to insure that all application materials, including both letters of recommendation and official transcript(s) are received in the program office by the application deadline. You can check the status of these materials by logging back into the application system using the email address and password you provided. NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE TO PROGRAM
All applicants will be informed of the Admission Committee’s decision via email the week of March 12, 2012.
